A committed destination
Since its creation, Avoriaz has been imagining a different way of experiencing the mountains. A fully pedestrian resort, architecture designed to blend into the landscape, a warm welcome and a constant commitment to improving its practices.
Today, several labels and distinctions recognise this unique identity. Environment, quality of hospitality, architectural heritage, geological richness and pet-friendly services: each one highlights a different aspect of Avoriaz.
More than just logos, these recognitions reflect concrete commitments and a continuous improvement approach carried out together with local stakeholders.
Flocon Vert
A mountain destination committed to the environment
Avoriaz has been involved in the Flocon Vert initiative since 2021, alongside Morzine. Led by the Mountain Riders association, Flocon Vert is both a certification and a continuous improvement initiative designed to support mountain destinations in their environmental, social and economic transition.
The initiative therefore goes beyond simply obtaining a certification. It regularly assesses the actions taken across the destination, identifies areas for improvement and helps build a collective roadmap involving elected representatives, residents, professionals and tourism stakeholders.
The Flocon Vert framework focuses in particular on mobility, energy, water, biodiversity, waste, the local economy, employment, accessibility, community life and raising visitors’ awareness.
Remarkable Contemporary Architecture
A unique architectural identity
It is impossible to talk about Avoriaz without mentioning its architecture. From the 1960s onwards, the resort was designed as a fully pedestrian development, entirely integrated into its natural surroundings.
Designed mainly by architects Jacques Labro, Jean-Jacques Orzoni and Jean-Marc Roques, Avoriaz broke away from the traditional codes of mountain resorts. Its buildings follow the contours of the terrain, play with volumes and echo the lines of the surrounding cliffs. Wood, angular shapes and façades that evolve over time allow the resort to interact with the landscape rather than dominate it.
Since 2003, the Avoriaz ski resort has held the distinction now known as Remarkable Contemporary Architecture. Awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, this recognition highlights buildings and urban developments less than 100 years old that are of particular architectural or technical interest.
This distinction reflects the innovative nature of the Avoriaz project, both in terms of architecture and urban planning. The resort was designed around pedestrian use, easy access to the slopes and careful integration into its natural setting
Géoparc mondial UNESCO du Chablais
Avoriaz is located in the heart of the Chablais, a region recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Between Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, the Chablais UNESCO Global Geopark brings together 62 municipalities across nearly 900 km² and offers a better understanding of the geological history of the Alps.
A UNESCO Global Geopark is an area whose landscapes and sites are of international geological significance. This recognition is not limited to rocks and landforms. It also highlights the connections between geology, landscapes, biodiversity, human activities, traditions and local expertise.
Around Avoriaz, the cliffs and former slate quarries bear witness in particular to the close relationship between the formation of the Alps and human activity in the region. Trails, geosites and interpretation facilities offer a new perspective on landscapes that we sometimes cross without knowing their origins.
Staying in Avoriaz therefore means discovering a living mountain environment, shaped by time and inhabited by generations of women and men.
Toutourisme
Dogs are welcome in Avoriaz
Avoriaz has been awarded the Toutourisme label, a distinction that recognises destinations offering services and facilities adapted to visitors travelling with their dogs.
This initiative aims to make it easier to prepare for a stay, better identify pet-friendly services and encourage respectful coexistence between visitors, dogs, local residents, livestock and the mountain environment.
On arrival, dog owners can find practical information as well as a free welcome kit including waste bags, a treat and a specialist magazine. Water bowls are also available at the Tourist Office.
A dedicated guide lists dog-friendly accommodation, shops and restaurants, as well as essential advice for enjoying the mountains safely.
Destination d'excellence
The Destination of Excellence label recognises the quality of the welcome and services offered to visitors, while fully integrating the challenges of sustainable development. Awarded to Avoriaz, it highlights the professionalism of the teams, the quality of the information provided, the attention paid to the visitor experience and the actions implemented to promote more responsible tourism.
This distinction is part of a continuous improvement approach, with the aim of providing every visitor with a high-quality welcome while continuing to develop the destination’s practices.
