Safety Reminder !

To enhance road user safety during the winter and to prevent blockages, the requirement for winter equipment applies in mountainous areas from November 1st to March 31st.

This obligation concerns light vehicles, utility vehicles, motorhomes, heavy trucks, and buses. Vehicles equipped with studded tires are exempt from this requirement.

For cars and light utility vehicles, two options are available:

  1. Removable anti-skid devices: Drivers must at least carry snow chains or snow socks in their trunk, allowing them to equip at least two driving wheels.

  2. Winter tires: Vehicles can also be equipped with four winter tires. These tires are identifiable by the « alpine symbol » (3 peaks with a snowflake) along with one of the markings « M+S, » « M.S, » or « M&S. »
*4-season tyres are authorised by mountain legislation in the same way as winter tyres.

Some Tips

Adapt Your Driving

  • Reduce your speed: Snowy or icy roads require slower and smoother driving.
  • Keep your distance: Braking distances are longer on slippery roads.
  • Use engine braking: When going downhill, use engine braking to avoid overusing the brakes and risking a skid.

Prepare Your Route

  • Check road conditions: Before you leave, regularly check the weather and possible road closures. Plan alternative routes.
  • Don’t go if the road is closed: Follow the local authorities’ instructions and do not attempt to drive on a road closed due to snow or avalanches.

Anticipate Weather Hazards

  • Check the weather: Snowstorms can occur suddenly in the mountains. Be prepared to change your plans if conditions become too dangerous.
  • Leave early: Set off in advance to avoid being stranded at night or on closed roads in extreme weather.
