Unique for its mimetic architecture, the resort was designed in the 1960s with an avant-garde approach. Cars are not allowed in the resort, and the streets are completely covered in snow. Transportation is primarily on foot, by sled, or by horse-drawn carriage. Discover the resort map to navigate through Avoriaz.

Ski area and maps

Avoriaz 1800 is located in the heart of Portes du Soleil, one of the largest cross-border ski areas in the world, where 12 French and Swiss resorts are interconnected.

Pedestrian resort

Since its creation, Avoriaz 1800 has been designed as a car-free resort, with a unique concept of a 100% pedestrian village. In winter, people move around on skis through snowy streets where skiers, pedestrians and horse-drawn sleighs share a magical setting. In summer, cars are left behind in favour of walking, cycling or riding a scooter, in a peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. Everything is within easy reach, surrounded by unspoiled nature. In Avoriaz, freedom and simplicity truly come to life.

Prodains Cable Car

At the dawn of the Avoriaz resort, in the early 1960s, it was decided to build a lift to allow skiers to access the resort from the Vallon des Ardoisières. The goal of this project was to avoid the winding road that connects Morzine, which is full of many hairpin bends. Construction of the cable car began in 1961, and the project was entrusted to the company Applevage. Inaugurated in 1962, this first cable car was a simple back-and-forth model, with an ascent time of about 7 minutes.

3S Express

From the 2000s, due to the importance of the link provided by the cable car, it was decided to replace it with a much more efficient system. The choice was made for the 3S cable car technology, which has the advantage of being both fast and having a very high capacity. The construction was entrusted to the French company Poma and the Italian company Leitner, both specialists in lift systems. The work began in the spring of 2012, and the new cable car was inaugurated a year later, in April 2013, just before the resort’s seasonal closure. The old cable car was dismantled the same year, but the top and bottom stations were retained.
