Safety and Prevention Avoriaz

Safety

and Prevention

In Avoriaz

Skiing in Avoriaz means enjoying an exceptional ski area in the heart of the Portes du Soleil. To ensure that the pleasure lasts from the very first to the very last turn, safety on the slopes is essential.

Whether you are a beginner, an experienced skier, skiing with family or friends, adopting the right habits helps reduce the risk of accidents and allows everyone to share the mountain in the best possible conditions.

In Avoriaz, prevention is part of a positive and responsible approach, embodied by the Slow Cool spirit: skiing mindfully, adapting your speed, and respecting others to prolong the enjoyment on the slopes.

1. Adjusting your speed: the number one rule on the slopes

Excessive speed is one of the main causes of skiing accidents. Adjusting your pace is essential to ensure your own safety and that of others.

It is important to:

  • Moderate your speed according to your technical level
  • Take weather conditions and snow conditions into account
  • Slow down in busy areas (snow fronts, intersections, bottom of slopes)
  • Anticipate the presence of beginner skiers or children

Slowing down also means extending your ski session and enjoying the mountains even more.

2. Respecting the skier’s code

The skier’s code is a set of essential rules designed to ensure safety on the slopes. It applies to everyone, regardless of skill level.

The fundamental rules to follow:

  • The downhill skier always has priority
  • The uphill skier must remain in control of their trajectory
  • Overtaking must be done with sufficient clearance
  • Stops should be made at the edge of the slope, never behind a bump or in a narrow passage
  • Signage and slope markings must be strictly respected

Respecting these rules allows for harmonious coexistence between all users of the ski area.

3. The helmet: an essential safety reflex

Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended for all skiers and snowboarders, regardless of age or skill level. It provides essential protection in the event of a fall or collision.

A helmet is particularly recommended:

  • For children and teenagers
  • In snowparks
  • On busy slopes
  • In conditions of reduced visibility

Wearing a helmet means protecting yourself while continuing to fully enjoy skiing and snowboarding.

And never forget: “NO HELMET – NO STYLE”

4. Alcohol and skiing: a risky combination

Consuming alcohol before or during skiing significantly increases the risk of accidents. Alcohol impairs reflexes, reduces alertness, and affects balance.

After a festive après-ski or a long break on a terrace, it is recommended to:

  • Significantly reduce your speed
  • Choose a safe way back to the resort
  • Postpone your descent to another time if necessary

If you have had too much to drink, the best option is to return calmly and enjoy the mountains in a different way.

5. Be vigilant at intersections and shared areas

Slope intersections, junctions, and transit areas are particularly sensitive zones. Increased attention is essential to avoid collisions.

In these areas, remember to:

  • Systematically slow down
  • Look uphill and downhill before entering
  • Stay visible and adopt a clear, predictable trajectory
  • Respect specific signage

Predictable behavior helps ensure everyone’s safety.

In case of an accident on the slopes: the right reflexes

In the event of an accident, it is essential to act quickly and effectively:

  • Secure the area to prevent a secondary accident
  • Alert the ski patrol using the emergency call points or the emergency numbers indicated on the trail map
  • You can contact our Ski Patrol Service at +33 (0)4 50 74 11 13 or 112
  • Clearly indicate the location of the accident (name of the slope, marker number)
  • Do not move an injured person unless there is immediate danger

Avoriaz’s rescue teams are trained and fully equipped to respond quickly across the entire ski area.

In case of heavy crowds

  • Respect other skiers
  • Reduce your speed
  • Stay in control of your line
  • Respect the signage
  • Remain vigilant on the slopes

Together, let’s preserve the pleasure of skiing in Avoriaz

Safety on the slopes relies on everyone’s responsibility. By adopting the right behavior, respecting the rules, and staying attentive to others, you help create a safer and more enjoyable mountain environment.
