about Avoriaz

in 10 seconds

Avoriaz is a unique resort. Pedestrian-only, ski-in/ski-out, and open exclusively in winter and summer, it operates differently from traditional resorts and has specific features that influence how you plan your stay, the type of accommodation you choose, and the best time to visit.

Here are the key things to know, in just a few seconds, before planning your trip.

Opening dates

Winter: from 12 December 2025 to 19 April 2026

Summer: from 26 June 2026 to 29 August 2026

Off-season: the resort remains accessible, but most shops, accommodation and activities are closed.

A high-altitude mountain resort

Located at an altitude of 1,800 metres, in the heart of the French Alps in Haute-Savoie, Avoriaz enjoys a well-preserved natural environment. This altitude ensures reliable natural snowfall in winter and pleasant temperatures in summer, with wide-open views of the surrounding mountains.

Avoriaz is located close to major access hubs such as Geneva, Thonon-les-Bains and Cluses, which serve as key arrival points by train, plane or car. Regular shuttle services and public transport then make it easy to reach the resort, both in winter and summer.

A fully pedestrian resort

Avoriaz is a 100% pedestrian resort, both in winter and summer. No cars are allowed within the resort. Getting around is done on foot and on skis in winter, or via pedestrian pathways in summer. Car parks are located at the entrance to the resort, ensuring a calm, safe and car-free atmosphere.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Avoriaz is mainly made up of apartments and tourist residences. The resort is relatively compact, allowing you to reach the resort centre and the Tourist Office in less than 15 minutes on foot from all accommodation.

This layout provides quick access to activities, shops and services, without the need for motorised transport. In winter, all accommodation is ski-in/ski-out, offering direct access to the slopes. In summer, it remains close to all the resort’s main points of interest.

Stays are most often from Saturday to Saturday

In Avoriaz, accommodation is mainly organised around weekly stays, most often from Saturday to Saturday, particularly during the winter season and school holidays. This format reflects the way most tourist residences operate and the high demand during these periods.

Short stays may however be offered occasionally, mainly outside peak periods and towards the end of the season.

It is strongly recommended to book in advance and to plan several weeks, or even several months ahead, in order to maximise your accommodation options.

Direct access to the Portes du Soleil ski area

Thanks to its location, Avoriaz offers direct access to the Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the largest ski domains in the world, linking France and Switzerland. The resort is a central starting point for exploring the area, whatever the season.

In winter

In winter, Avoriaz provides direct ski-in/ski-out access to the entire Portes du Soleil ski area. Skiers and snowboarders can move freely between the French and Swiss resorts without ever leaving the slopes. This seamless ski area offers a wide variety of terrain, skill levels and atmospheres, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers.

The resort’s altitude and geography ensure optimal snow conditions from December to April, allowing visitors to fully enjoy winter sports.

In summer

In summer, the Portes du Soleil area becomes a vast playground dedicated to outdoor activities. From Avoriaz, it is easy to access hiking trails, mountain bike routes, panoramic paths and mountain leisure areas, without the need for shuttles or long waiting times. Ski lifts make it easier to explore the area and fully enjoy the Alpine landscapes, in a well-preserved natural setting.

Bonus: During the summer season, Avoriaz is part of the Multi Pass Portes du Soleil programme. This pass provides access to a wide range of leisure activities across the entire Portes du Soleil area. It notably includes access to numerous ski lifts for pedestrians, as well as various activities and leisure facilities available with the Multi Pass.

The Multi Pass is a simple and cost-effective way to discover the mountains in summer and make the most of the activities on offer.
